Documentary Production Cost in Thailand: A Budget Guide

A commissioning editor rings on a Tuesday. There is a film, and the Thailand leg runs about ten days. Someone fixed the documentary production cost in Thailand nine months ago, and that someone has never worked here.

That call is where most factual budgets go wrong. Not because the number is too small. Because the shape of the money is wrong for the way factual units actually work on the ground in Thailand.

So this piece follows one composite job from that call through to delivery. It puts each documentary production cost in Thailand where it actually lands. The figures quoted are published Thai market ranges from third parties, and they are not an Overgrown quote.

Where the documentary production cost in Thailand actually starts

It starts before anyone books a flight. Three decisions in the first week set the documentary production cost in Thailand. How many locations does the story need? At what speed must the unit move? And does the film run interview-led or observational?

Then everything else follows from those three. Crew size, vehicle count, shooting ratio, edit assist hours, translation load. Change any one of them in week three and the budget moves by a fifth.

Thailand is a busy market, and that cuts both ways for a documentary production cost in Thailand. Thailand’s Department of Tourism recorded 302 international productions and roughly THB 4.03 billion of investment in the first half of 2026. The United Kingdom ranked fifth among source markets. In general the depth of crew here is excellent. But in peak weeks the good factual operators are already out.

The commission arrives with a number attached

Broadcasters and streamers set factual budgets per finished hour. They do that long before anyone knows what Thailand costs. International benchmarks for that hourly figure sit in the published documentary budget benchmarks the commissioning market works from.

But your Thailand leg is only a slice of that number. Usually a small one. So the first job is honest triage. What can the schedule deliver inside that slice? And what has to come out now rather than in week two?

We would rather have that conversation on the first call. A production that cuts a location before the recce saves the whole cost of the recce day. Cut it afterwards and you have already paid for the scout, the driver and the fixer’s time.

The recce is the cheapest week you will spend

Skip the recce and you buy the same information later at four times the price.

In practice a recce day carries a fixer, a vehicle and a driver. Sometimes a stills camera as well. Against a shoot day carrying a full unit, transport, kit hire and contributor logistics, the ratio is not close. Our notes on location scouting in Thailand set out what a proper scout covers.

On investigative and access-led work the recce does something else. It tells you whether the story is where the researcher thinks it is. That answer is worth more than any location photograph.

What a fixer does to the documentary production cost in Thailand

A good fixer looks expensive on one budget line and cheap everywhere else. That single hire moves the documentary production cost in Thailand further than any camera decision.

The role covers local research, contributor approach and translation on the floor. It also covers access negotiation, and the judgement calls that keep a fast shoot moving. And on a factual job the fixer is often the reason a sequence happens at all. Our guide to hiring a documentary fixer in Thailand sets out the role in detail. The wider production-service version sits in the film fixer guide.

Here is the thing that surprises visiting producers. Splitting the fixer role from the production manager, to save a line, usually costs more. Two part-time people covering one job means neither holds the whole picture. On a moving story the whole picture is the product.

Crew shape for a factual unit

Factual crews are small, so the saving is real. A two or three person unit can cover a day that a drama unit would staff with eight.

Two shapes come up most. A self-shooting director with a local sound recordist. Or a director plus camera plus sound, with a fixer running access. Add a second camera only when the sequence needs two angles at once.

Where the film is observational, keep the unit small for a second reason. Contributors behave differently in front of six people than in front of two. No amount of edit work recovers a stiff scene. Our guide to hiring a film crew in Thailand covers the local roles and how they are engaged.

Bilingual crew removes a whole layer from the documentary production cost in Thailand. If the director cannot tell in the moment whether an answer landed, the unit shoots more to be safe. Every extra card then lands in the edit as an hour of assist time.

Day rates inside a documentary production cost in Thailand

The table below shows published Thai market ranges from a third-party Thailand production pricing guide updated in March 2026. These are market ranges rather than an Overgrown quote. Factual work typically sits toward the lower half of each band.

Line Published Thai market range What moves it
Director of photography THB 10,000 to 40,000 per day Experience, whether they supply a camera package, self-shooting or not
Sound recordist THB 5,000 to 30,000 per day Radio channel count, kit supplied, remote or urban work
Editor THB 5,000 to 20,000 per day Offline only, or offline through to finishing
Colour grade THB 5,000 to 20,000 Running time and the broadcaster’s delivery specification
Voice-over, Thai then English THB 3,000 to 15,000, and THB 5,000 to 25,000 Session length and usage rights

Notice what is missing. Fixer, vehicles, contributor logistics and translation carry no published range. On a factual job they often outweigh the camera line.

Kit inside a documentary production cost in Thailand

For a ten-day factual shoot, local hire almost always wins.

Bringing a package from London or Los Angeles means carnet paperwork and excess baggage. It also means airport time, and a repair problem if anything fails. Hiring in Bangkok means the same body and glass, next-day swaps, and no customs exposure. Our guide to film equipment rental in Thailand covers what Bangkok houses carry. The equipment page lists what we hold.

However, there is one exception. A specific body the DoP has to match to existing rushes. Then bring it and hire everything around it.

Sound is where factual budgets get thin

Producers cut the sound line first. On a monitor the picture looks the same either way, so the saving feels free.

Here is the mechanism. A self-shooting director running a single radio mic gets clean audio in a quiet room. Then the sequence moves to a market, a boat or a roadside, and the second contributor is unmiked. In the edit, half the exchange reaches broadcast quality and half does not. The sequence then cuts around the answer you needed. Nobody hears the problem on the day. Everybody hears it in the review. So the saving on a recordist reappears as a lost sequence, and a lost sequence is a lost shoot day.

A recordist with a multi-channel bag and radio mics on both parties costs less than the reshoot. More on the local craft in our notes on production sound in Thailand.

Movement is the line producers underestimate

Thailand is bigger than the map suggests, and factual schedules move at short notice.

The instinct is to book point-to-point transfers and save the idle hours. Then a lead develops at four in the afternoon. The unit needs to be somewhere else, and there is no vehicle. Holding a vehicle and driver for the day looks wasteful on paper. In fact it buys the thing factual work runs on, which is the ability to change your mind. Our notes on production transport in Thailand set out how we plan unit moves.

Budget road time honestly. Bangkok to a provincial location eats a working half day at each end. A unit arriving at seven in the evening does not shoot that night.

Permits, access and the parallel permissions layer

Filming legally in Thailand runs through the Thailand Film Office. We handle that route as a TFO-registered production service company. Our Thailand film permit guide and the film permit page set out the process. The budget side sits in our notes on Thailand film permit cost, which feeds straight into any documentary production cost in Thailand.

Beyond the permit itself, several locations carry their own permission layer. National parks, temples and heritage sites each run their own approval, and those run in parallel rather than after. Our guide to filming in Thai temples and heritage sites covers the protocol side.

Crew immigration sits alongside this. Rather than guess, read our guide to the film crew visa route in Thailand. Tell us your shoot length early, because it changes the paperwork.

Contributor costs nobody budgets

Contributors are free. Getting to them is not.

A factual budget should carry contributor travel, a meal, a chaperone where the subject is vulnerable, and time. Then interviews slip. A contributor who agreed on Monday goes quiet on Wednesday, and the unit holds a day. That day still costs full crew.

Where the subject is sensitive, add a second layer. Anonymisation in post, a safe location, and sometimes legal review before transmission. None of that is expensive on its own. All of it is expensive if it arrives as a surprise in the final week.

Shooting ratio and what it does to post

This is the number that quietly sets the back half of the budget.

Interview-led factual runs lean, so the ratio often sits under ten to one. Observational work runs far heavier, and forty to one is not unusual on an access-led shoot. That difference is not a shooting decision. It lands as edit assist hours, media management and, in Thailand, transcription.

Because Thai-language rushes need transcription and translation, an editor cannot start without them. Budget that as a line rather than assuming an assistant will absorb it. It is the single most common omission we see on incoming factual budgets.

Post-production and delivery in a documentary production cost in Thailand

Post can happen here or at home. The honest answer depends on your edit producer, and on where the documentary production cost in Thailand still has room.

Cutting in Bangkok saves money. It also puts the edit next to the translation and the fixer, which matters on foreign-language material. Cutting at home suits a series with a house style and an established assistant team. Either way, grade, mix and delivery to broadcaster specification can run through our post-production team.

Still, delivery specification drives more cost than producers expect. Caption files, textless versions, audio stems, music cue sheets and compliance paperwork all take time. Ask the commissioner for the delivery document in week one.

Where the money goes across different factual formats

The same ten days produce a different documentary production cost in Thailand depending on the format.

Interview-led returning-series work is the most predictable, because the locations are known and the ratio is low. Access-led observational work is the least predictable, because the schedule follows the contributor. Presenter-led travel factual sits between them, and carries the extra cost of a fronted talent schedule and more movement. Our guide to travel and tourism film production covers that third case.

Meanwhile, specialist factual carries its own additions. Natural history work needs long lenses, hides and patience, as our notes on wildlife filming in Thailand explain. Any sequence involving animals also carries a welfare and handling layer, covered in filming with animals. Aerials add a permission and operator line described in our aerial filming guide.

What we advise against

We advise against locking flights and hotels before the recce comes back.

It feels efficient. In fact it is the most common way a factual budget loses money in Thailand. The recce moves a location roughly half the time on access-led work. Once the travel is locked, the schedule bends to the booking rather than to the story. Productions then shoot the second-best sequence, because the flights will not refund.

Book the recce. Hold the travel for a week. The change fees you avoid pay for the scouting day several times over.

Contingency, and why factual needs more of it

Scripted work can hold a low contingency because the script is the plan. Factual has no such protection, so a documentary production cost in Thailand needs more room.

First, weather moves an outdoor sequence. Then a contributor withdraws. A lead opens and the unit follows it. Each of those is normal, and each costs a day. Build the contingency into the schedule as held days rather than as a cash line. You can release a held day back. A cash line quietly disappears into other overspends.

Our notes on production accounting in Thailand cover how we track a documentary production cost in Thailand while the shoot runs. The line producer guide explains who owns the number day to day.

What the money did on a Channel 4 shoot

We ran the Thailand leg of Hunting Britain’s Fugitives: Dispatches for Channel 4. End to end, from first recce to final wrap.

Investigative current affairs is the hardest case for a budget, because the story sets the pace and locations shift at short notice. The money on that job went where this article says it goes. A fixer who could open access quickly took the largest share. Next came a small bilingual unit that could move and stay discreet. Then held transport, and a permit route run through the proper channels, so the visiting team could concentrate on the journalism.

The full account sits in the Hunting Britain’s Fugitives case study. Production-side detail sits in our piece on producing an investigative documentary in Thailand. Fifteen years and more than four hundred productions sit behind that. We have supported factual work for Vice, Al Jazeera, Reuters and the United Nations. You can see the range on our work.

Reducing the documentary production cost in Thailand without hurting the film

Four moves save real money and cost the film nothing.

So cluster your locations. Two provinces beat five, and the saving is in road days rather than in crew. Hire kit locally instead of carrying it. Book bilingual crew so the unit shoots what it needs and stops. And send the delivery specification in week one, so post is built once.

One further point for eligible projects. Thailand operates a cash rebate scheme for qualifying foreign productions. Whether a factual project qualifies depends on spend and format. Our guide to the Thailand film incentive for foreign productions sets out the mechanics. Co-production routes sit in the Thailand co-production guide.

For the wider market picture, our 2026 Thailand production market report sets out where the volume is going.

What we need to quote a documentary production cost in Thailand

Five things, and a treatment is not one of them.

The number of shoot days in Thailand. The number of distinct locations, and roughly where. Whether the film is interview-led, observational or presenter-led. The language of the contributors. And the delivery specification, or the broadcaster’s name if the spec is not written yet.

With those we can put a documentary production cost in Thailand in front of you inside two working days. It arrives broken into lines you can argue with. Full capability sits on our documentary production in Thailand page and across our wider production services.

Questions about budget and crew for a documentary production cost in Thailand

How much does a ten-day documentary shoot in Thailand cost?

It depends far more on location count and format than on shoot days. Published Thai market day rates put a director of photography between THB 10,000 and 40,000. A sound recordist runs THB 5,000 to 30,000. Factual work usually sits in the lower half of both bands. However, fixer, transport, translation and contributor logistics often outweigh the camera line. Send us the shape of the job and we will build the number properly.

Is it cheaper to shoot factual in Thailand than to bring a full unit?

Yes, in almost every case. A resident bilingual crew removes flights, per diems, carnet paperwork and excess baggage. It also removes the shooting-more-to-be-safe habit that a language gap creates. Our Bangkok production team works in English and Thai as standard.

What crew size should a factual budget carry?

Two to three people covers most factual days here, plus a fixer running access. The leanest workable shape is a self-shooting director with a local sound recordist. Add a second camera only when a sequence needs two angles at once.

How much contingency should a documentary budget hold?

More than a scripted project, and it should sit in the schedule rather than in cash. You can release held days back if the shoot runs clean. A cash contingency tends to vanish into other lines. Weather, contributor withdrawal and a developing lead each cost a day and each is normal on factual work.

More questions about permits, kit and delivery

Do documentary shoots need a film permit in Thailand?

Filming here runs through the Thailand Film Office, and we handle that route as a TFO-registered production service company. Several locations also carry their own permission layer, and those approvals run in parallel rather than in sequence. Our film permit guide sets out the process.

Should we bring our own camera package?

For a shoot of around ten days, local hire almost always wins. It removes carnet paperwork, excess baggage and the repair risk. Bangkok stocks the same bodies and glass, with next-day swaps. Bring only a specific body the DoP has to match to existing rushes.

Can you cut and finish the film in Bangkok?

Yes. Cutting here puts the edit next to the translation and the fixer, which matters on Thai-language material. Grade, mix and delivery to broadcaster specification all run through our post team. Some series still prefer to cut at home with an established assistant team, and either route works.

What is the most commonly missed line on incoming factual budgets?

Transcription and translation of Thai-language rushes. An editor cannot work with untranslated material, so the load lands on edit assist and quietly extends the post schedule. Budget it as its own line at the point you set the shooting ratio.
